Diseases To Avoid For Healthy Pets

By Carl Young

It is a good idea to have pets especially if your aim is to drive away tension and have a companion you can always talk to. This is a healthy practice that should be encouraged but care must be taken to ensure that what you are going to get are healthy pets that are free from different kinds of diseases. The quality of a pet's health depends on the absence of common diseases that should not be mentioned around you. However, to be on a safe side, it is good you know some of them and the signs that indicate danger on the health of both you and your pets.

Kidney disease is a type of pet disease. It happens mostly to cats that are old, but it still occurs in the younger ones and dogs. Animals suffering from kidney disease have difficulty in forming urine and they may have gotten the condition from their parents.

Some diseases are better managed since they have the tendency to occur in several species; an example of such is diabetes. Diabetes occurs when there is excess glucose in the blood and this can take several years to be noticed. At old age, the body loses some of its capacity to convert the excess glucose in the blood. A veterinary doctor should be at hand anytime such a condition arises.

Fleas and ticks are among the worst enemies of pets because they have the potential of transferring disease causing organisms. What makes them more terrific is that you may not notice on time since they hide in the fur. You are therefore encouraged to house your pets and clean them frequently.

Cattle and dogs suffer from rabies. However, this should not cause panic because vaccines have been invented for their protection. There were times in the past when rabies claimed the lives of pet owners who were still ignorant about the disease. Rabies has peculiar symptoms such as abnormal postures, agitation, hallucination and confusion. This viral disease can be prevented by immunization.

Another viral disease that affects pets is encephalitis. Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by viral infection from an infected mosquito. When the infected pet bites its owner, the same disease and symptoms are also passed across. Animals that can be affected include birds and horses. The symptoms of encephalitis include fatigue, headache, fever and muscle aches.

Pet lovers who are fond of rabbits and poultry should also be informed about pasteurellosis. This bacterial disease causes the inflammation of the eye and lymph nodes. In man, infection is noticed when the eye hurts and pneumonia occurs. Cats also have high infection rates and they can also transfer the disease to man.

The abundance of diseases does not necessarily mean that it is impossible to have a healthy pet. Actually, if you play your own part well, you will have no problems and your pets will give you the companionship you desire. All you need to do is to pay close attention to them and call your veterinary doctor anytime you suspect something you cannot handle.
