Tips To Find A Great Labrador Retriever Breeder

By Virginia Parker

Finding a reputable dog breeder does not need to be a challenge. With a few simple guidelines, it can be very easy, and can help potential owners to avoid some of the problems they are likely to encounter if they do not do careful research in their Labrador retriever breeder.

The number one thing about a really good breeder is that they care about their animals and only breed to enhance the Labrador breed. They do not make lots of money because they invest the money into the animals and do not over breed their animals which can cause health issues.

Ask a potential breeder about the background and lineage of their breeding stock. Ask questions, and feel good about the answers provided. There should be openness and honesty, and the owners should be proud to provide endless information about their stock. Don't feel bad asking a lot of questions; purebred dogs are expensive and buyers should expect to get quality for their money.

Well known, excellent breeders often have a waiting list. They do not advertise their puppies because they have been spoken for, sometimes even long before they have been conceived. Most will require potential owners to fill in an application, and some may want to visit the home that the puppy will be going to. They want to ensure that their puppies are going to only the very best homes.

As to view veterinary records of all of the puppies and their parents. There should be detailed information and all vaccinations and any other care required should not be outstanding. This is part of the reason it is expensive to buy a purebred, because veterinary care is not inexpensive. They often have an excellent relationship with their veterinarian and are able to answer any questions asked about the care of their dogs. Knowing that proper care has been provide for a puppy and its mother is important and should not be overlooked.

Puppy mills are places where animals are kept in small cages and are kept only to be forced to have litter after litter. There is often no veterinary care for any of the animals and vaccinations are rarely done. These animals live a terrible life and are not considered a part of the family. They are often very inexpensive and, unfortunately, this is why they continue to produce animals. Many of the animals being sold in pet stores are from puppy mills.

Taking the time to do careful research is worth it. Getting to know your retriever breeder, and to know that they care about the animals they are selling, can be the difference between getting a healthy, quality dog as opposed to one that could have the potential to have lots of health problems because of irresponsible breeding.

While it can be a lot of work to find a great retriever breeder, it will definitely pay off in the long run, Being patient, asking questions, and assuring that your puppy has come from someone who cares about the breed can help make sure a healthy and happy animal will be joining the family.
