Understanding Pet Grieving And Loss

By Shirley West

Losing a pet can be tragic. However, if you deal with your emotions in the right way, you will find that you will be able to cope with this. It is never a good idea to bottle these feelings up because you will have to deal with this at some point. Pet grieving will come up when you are least expecting it, and one has to know how to cope with it.

You may be feeling guilty at a time like this because of the fact that you had expensive vet bills that you simply could not afford to pay. Your pet could have been involved in a serious accident. One always wishes that they could have been there at the time. However, these are thoughts that you have to put aside.

Some people may feel guilty during this time, not being able to do enough for the animal. It may have been in an accident and you may been been feeling guilty, wishing you were there at the time. Vet bills are expensive and this is something that you were not able to afford. Operations could also be something that you were not able to afford.

It can be a good idea to plant a tree or a special rose bush which will symbolize the love you had for your pet. Some people even go to the length of heading off somewhere special where they will make a tomb stone that is dedicated to their pet. This depends entirely on the individual and what it means to them.

The same would apply for another pet in the family. They would act like another sibling. They would have been with the animals day and night. To suddenly lose their friend can be hugely traumatic. They would not have had a chance to say goodbye. Sometimes they will be looking and searching around the house for him or her. You need to give them lots of attention during this time.

Although you will become depressed and lonely, you have to realize that this is only natural. It is part of the grieving process. You may also find that at times you will also become angry. You may go through times where you will become angry with yourself and frustrated with others around you. It can be a good idea to take time out, while not forgetting to socialize from time to time.

Children will also suffer during a loss like this. They would have established a close relationship with a pet. Many kids are given a pet for a birthday. They develop a sense of responsibility by taking the dog for a walk or giving the cat their food. They will have questions during a time like this, and it is part of life. They will need attention because it will create a lot of trauma in their life.

It is not always easy to know when your pet needs to be put to sleep. Sometimes, pets are very old and are unable to cope with life anymore. There are illnesses that they develop, such as cancer. One often just wants to put them out of their suffering. One knows this is the right thing to do. Obviously, at the same time you don't want to part with them.
