How To Make It Easier For Your Pet To Wear A Dog Cone Collar

By Joyce Bell

Your pet can get injured to the extent that it needs medical care or surgery. When this happens, it may have to wear a dog cone collar to help it recover faster. This is because most animals tend to chew or scratch wounds. This can make it harder for them to recover fast. Since a lot of animals don't like wearing this chocker, there are a number of things that you can do to make this easier for them.

You have to realize that it will be quite challenging for your pet to have its meals or drink water with the accessory on. This is mainly due to the size of the accessory. For this reason, consider getting a larger sized feeding bowl for your pet for the time being. This bowl should be bigger than the chocker, so that the animal's head can get into it. If you don't want to do a lot of cleaning up after the animal has eaten, spread some newspaper on the floor where the animal usually eats.

Give the animal time to learn how to eat while having the choker on. They will eventually get the hang of it after a couple of tries. The other thing you can do is to take off the gadget when the animal is eating or drinking and then put it back on when they have finished eating. Just note that you have to monitor the animal closely to stop it from scratching and biting the wound.

Put the feeding dish into an elevated area. This will prevent your pet from bumping the choker on the floor when feeding. It would also help if you kept the feeding bowl away from the wall or counter tops when eating.

It will be uncomfortable for the animal to sleep when they have the chocker on. You can give them a pillow and see if it helps to make them more comfortable. Furthermore, move their bed so that it lies against the wall. It will make the dog feel more secure.

It may help to lead your animal around the house, so as to prevent it from bumping into stuff as it walks around the house. The easiest option would be for you to remove any obstructions. That will save both you and the animal a lot of frustration.

Ensure that the choker the animal gets fits. If it is very big, it will be too bulky. If it is too small, it may be quite tight for the dog, therefore uncomfortable.

You may have to dedicate time and energy into taking care of your pet when it is recovering. This is because having the collar on is uncomfortable for your dog, in addition to the fact that it is not feeling well. Be tender towards it and be tolerant since it is quite easy for you to lose your patience when the animal gets irritable or it messes up.
