The Pros And Cons Of Shelties For Sale In Your Area

By Jessica Butler

Dog lovers usually have preferences when it comes to what kind of pet they want. Some love big, active animals, while others prefer tiny dogs that love to cuddle. Unfortunately there are people who don't do enough homework before they purchase a dog, and the breed they thought would suit them perfectly turns out to something entirely different. If a Sheltie is a dog that interests you, it is important to learn about Shelties for sale before you make any commitment.

This is a generally sweet tempered breed that loves to please. The dogs are gentle and calm under most circumstances and blend in well with families that already have other pets. They can be reserved around strangers, but usually tolerate their attention. These canines are so beautiful owners have to get used to adults and children admiring them and sometimes getting too close too quickly.

The thing you will hear over and over again about this breed is that the dogs are highly intelligent. This is a great characteristic, but it has its challenges. Because they are so smart, they are also easily bored and require constant mental stimulation to keep them out of trouble. Most Shetlands are up for even the most complicated games, tricks, and commands.

It naturally follows that, if you own a Sheltie, you have to be ready to give it plenty of exercise. Just opening the back door and letting it out into the yard is not going to be enough. If you want a dog that can be taught advanced obedience and commands, this is the animal for you. Before making a commitment however, you have to make sure you have the time and energy to give this dog the stimulation it requires.

Although Shelties generally stay calm around their families, sudden noises or tense situations will make them nervous. They don't particularly like sudden, unexpected movement either, or young children who want to pull or ride them. If you bring a Shetland puppy into a chaotic household, you are going to end up with a dog that is jumpy, nervous, and unhappy.

You are a good candidate for a Shetland if you aren't intimidated by a highly intelligent animal that requires a lot of attention. They must be groomed regularly to keep their beautiful coats sleek and shining. Shelties don't do well alone for long periods of time. When they get bored, they will get into anything they can find and destroy it.

You might want to pass on a Sheltie if you don't have the patience to live with an animal that can be high strung, sensitive, and shy. People who are away from home all day and have to leave a pet unattended probably don't need a Sheltie. You must have the time to give it the physical and mental stimulation it needs as well.

This is a beautiful breed with intelligence and energy. They make great pets for the right owners. Before you bring one into your home, take the time to find out if the Sheltie fits your personality and lifestyle.
