Many of us veteran pet owners would sometimes want to go do something put of the mainstream and adopt or take an exotic kind of pet, or one that is not so ordinary, into our lives. Origin of the safari cat is when the Geoffroy's Cat was crossed cross with the domestic shorthair. The hybrid is the result called the safari cat. The Geoffroy's cat is a wild cat that is somewhat related to the South American ocelot. Due to the differing number of chromosomal pairs in wild and domesticated cats, it can be a very difficult to have a successful pairing. Breeding was first done in the 1970s.

Another reason why they are difficult to breed is that the male Geoffroy's cat may attack or even kill the domestic shorthair it is paired with, especially for the first generation. Once they do breed successfully, the result, called a safari, which can be called as the world's tallest domestic cat. It is a cat that is both gentle and calm in temperament.

According to TICA, or The International Cat Association registry, there are only about 70 owners of this exotic pet. Exotic is a term given when a breed is a result of the cross breeding of a wild parent with a domesticated one. This breed has the same distinction as Chausi, Bengals and Savannah cats as being exotic, but is considered as the "Rolls Royce of Exotic Cats".

They do look very sleek and long, making them tall, and also very svelte. Their colors range according to the region that they come from and can range anywhere from shades of deep orange to black and silver grey.

Maintenance wise it is not difficult to look after this breed as they are fairly low maintenance. They do not require any additional care or attention. They can be fed normal cat food, but for most owners they will prefer to give them a special diet. This diet is usually a mixed diet that is balanced with raw meat.

It is by nature a curious and also very active cat, which can get it into trouble most of the time. This is a cat that is more suited to an owner who has an active lifestyle than a sedentary one. Once you own this cat, prepare for a lot of activity in the home.

As for temperament, when it is properly socialized, results can be quite remarkable. Many will say that this is the feline version of the dog, it is immediately loyal to family members and wary of strangers. It is prone to pouting when left out and learn simple to complex commands. It is also a cat that is quite long lived that can live up to 20 years given proper care.
