By Amy Price

Physical therapy also goes by the name physiotherapy or simply as PT. PT is a specialty within the field of medicine that aims to promote and restore mobility and function of the body. The field also deals with the remediating impairments using mechanical force, movements, and manual therapy. Electrotherapy as well as exercise therapy are also widely used. Physical therapists are the medical practitioners who specialize in physiotherapy. They are also called physiotherapists. This is worth knowing about Northern VA Canine Physical Therapy.

The main goal of physiotherapy is to address injuries and illnesses that make it hard for people to perform their activities and to move as they should normally. Therapists in this field provide diagnosis to patients after examining their medical histories and previous treatments. They then formulate a treatment plan that is aimed at regaining function and mobility.

In large part, PT is usually used as a complementary form of treatment alongside other treatment options. For instance, when one has a leg injury, a prosthetic is fitted on the leg, but a physiotherapist is needed to help with regaining mobility. In the course of doing their job, PTs perform physical examinations in order to make accurate diagnoses. Based on the diagnosis, a suitable treatment plan is formulated.

Sometimes a diagnosis may not be able to be made after a physical examination. In such a case, additional diagnostic tests are conducted. Such tests are done in the laboratory and they include CT-scan, X-ray, and MRI. The practitioner bases on the medical history and symptoms that a patient has had to choose the best diagnostic test to use. That is the reason it is important to be open with the therapist about the history of the condition and its symptoms. Multiple diagnostic tests may be used in certain cases.

Electromyograms and nerve conduction velocity testing are among the tests that are performed on rare occasions. Common prescriptions offered by PTs include manipulation, mechanical devices, manual therapy, specific exercises, radiation, assistive devices, prostheses, and orthoses. Other prescriptions that may also be given to a patient are sound waves, electricity, heat, and cold. These are classified under physical agents. Patients are helped out by therapists to engage in specific physical exercises in certain cases. Also, PIs offer specific therapies.

PTs work with patients to help in prevention of loss of mobility. Here, they help by developing fitness and wellness-oriented programs. These programs are meant to assist patients to lead more active lifestyles. People who benefit the most from such programs include the elderly and people whose ability to move and function is threatened by disease, injury, and environmental factors. This way, mobility is maintained in the society, which in turn boosts productivity and better quality of life.

This field has many subspecialties. They include sports, neurology, wound care, musculoskeletal, EMG, geriatrics, pediatrics, orthopedics, and cardiopulmonary. Neurological rehabilitation is a rapidly emerging subspecialty in this field. Sports physiotherapists are also many, and they are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that athletes are in top physical form to engage in sports.

Physiotherapists work in a wide range of settings. Some of them are employed in outpatient clinics, health and wellness clinics, rehabilitation hospitals, schools, fitness and sports centers, and private homes among others. Some also work as self-employed workers where they serve walk-in clients in a practice that they own.
