How To Turn Your Cujo Into Lassie

By Bob McKinney

You have a new member to you family, he's furry and has four legs and loves you for no other reason than for being you. Sometimes though, a new puppy can make your neighbors hate you, your yard a mess, your home a mess and wedded bliss well something other than bliss. So to save yourself hours of doggy induce drama as well as keeping your pup happy as well dog training is essential. Combining the knowledge of the experts with the right attitude will help you turn your tailed tear away into a model doggy citizen. The following four tips have been tried and tested by the professionals.

Who Is The Boss?

Dogs are pack animals by nature so if you want you need to be the pack leader. To stop the pack dissolving into panic and chaos there is always just a single alpha male. You need to assert yourself as the pack leader of the family. Taking your puppy for walks and completing obedience training courses can help you to assert your leadership over him. Controlling you dogs food is a great to show him that you are the alpha dog. If you dog learns that you will feed him twice a day and no more then he will learn that you are the pack leader.

Treat Him The Same

If your dog doesn't learn a command experts say that it isn't his fault, professionals agree that in most cases it's the owner that is at fault when a dog doesn't understand what you want him to do. Everything in the dog world is either black or white where humans see a whole swathe of grays. People know that "Come" and "C'mon" have become synonymous, dogs on the other hand don't know that they mean the same thing so saying "C'mon" in place of "Come" will only succeed in confusing the dog. To limit the confusion to a bare minimum it is vital that you use the same tone of voice and the same words when teaching your dog a new command.

Obedience Comes from Respect

Mutual respect must be established between you and your dog for your to have a lasting, loving relationship. It's not hard to build a bond based on mutual respects you for your position as the alpha male you must respects all of his needs. Respect is not won out of fear, as when animals get scared they strike out and it is not found at the bottom of a pack of doggy treats. The only reward you will get if you treat him too much or are too stern is very erratic behavior, a bond of respect comes from praising him and correcting him properly.

It Is All In The Timing

Time factors in to every part of your furry friends training schedule. Over the course of your dogs life he will have picked up habits that will make it harder for you to train him than when he is a puppy that hasn't had time to learn the habits. Mistakes tend to happen when you try and train your dog over a long and drawn out training session. To help keep you dog focused on the task at hand you it is recommended that you keep your trains sessions at around the 15 minute mark to increase that chance that your dog will stay focused. When you take on the role as pack leader timing is essential as well. In a natural dog pack the alpha male will eat first so mimicking this behavior in your own home be feeding your dog after you've finished eating is a great way of reminding him of who is the top dog.

Where as dog training has to be done, it doesn't have to be looked at as work. So that training you dog doesn't become a chore is it important to make sure that you find a trainer that makes things easy and enjoyable for both of you.
