Article From SubmitYOURArticle.com: Four Most Common Cichlid Species

As far back as the mid 1940's, different cichlid
species were quickly becoming popular aquarium
fish. They became so popular for many different
reasons, but mainly they were the perfect size
for aquariums and easy to care for. The
following article will discuss four of the most
common cichlid species that are now popular with
aquarists all over the world.

Angelfish are one of the most popular cichlid
species among aquarium owners. They are native
to several South American rivers such as the
Orinoco and Amazons rivers. Angelfish are one of
the most non-aggressive cichlid species, which
contributes greatly to their popularity. They
generally have an inquisitive nature, and unique
appearance, that also draws people to them.
Their thin body and long tapering fins look
particularly striking if you have an aquarium
full of oval shaped fish. In addition, they are
easy to care for, as they adapt to a wide range
of water conditions well.

Oscar fish are another popular breed of cichlid
species, especially among men. They can grow to
be over 18 inches long, and can grow at a rapid
pace. Oscars are also known as Velvet Cichlid,
Tiger Oscar, and Marble Cichlid. They are hardy
fish, who also adapt well to a wide range of
water conditions. Oscars are not picky eaters,
but prefer foods like flakes, live food, and
nutrition pellets. If an Oscar is underfed, he
will typically lose color.

The Jack Dempsey is another highly popular
cichlid species. One of the reasons these fish
are so popular is because their colors are quite
exciting and they can change as the fish ages.
When Jack Dempsey's are young they start with a
light tan or grey with turquoise specks. With
time, their main color will begin to turn
purple-grey with bright colored highlights. Gold
specks will begin to replace the turquoise. In
case you are wondering, the Jack Dempsey breed
gets its name from the former heavy-weight boxer

Finally, Convict Cichlids are a cichlid species
that is popular among fish owners. This cichlid
species is considered one of the best for
beginners, as they are small, easy to keep, and
easy to breed. They are not picky eaters, either.
All that is required to successfully keep this
cichlid species is to replicate their natural
habitat the best that you can. Here is a hint
for you, convict cichlids are from the African
Rift Lakes (which one I won't say, you'll have to
do a little research). Doing the research
yourself will make this experience that much more
rewarding.
