Selecting A Name For Your Tiny Little Dog

By Gareth Johnson

You have a new puppy - congratulations! You're in for a lot of fun. You probably now realize you have to name the new puppy too. This can be a lot of pressure, to find the right name for this tiny animal that you have only just met. You want a cool name, that fits its personality, and that isn't goofy or overly cute and so on.

If you get too stuck you can always go with a classic, like Spot or Fido. There are pet names that have been around forever, we've all heard of them and they never go out of style. If you have kids, though, that's probably not an option. Kids generally want more hip names for pets. You can also name your pet 'after' someone or something - mythological creatures or figures, signers, presidents, ancient royalty, literally the only limit is your imagination.

Here are a few suggestions to help you in your deliberations:

First, you need to pick a name you really like. You'll be calling your dog by this name for fifteen years or more.

A shorter name is usually better. Think one to three syllables. More than this and it becomes really cumbersome to call the dog. There are dogs that have a bunch of names, like first and middle names. You can do this but don't get overly complex.

Whenever you talk to the puppy, be sure to use his name. When he hears his name, ideally you want him to come running. Because you'll be saying it a lot, in private and in public, don't pick a name that you will be embarrassed to say in front of people or that may offend others.

You don't have to name your puppy right away. Take some time to play with the puppy. This lets you get to know him before you pick a name. It's better to let the puppy go without a name for a few days or a week, than to name him right away and then decide later that the name doesn't fit.

Get advice. Family and friends can also give you valuable input. Try a Name The Puppy party. Invite folks over and then offer a prize to whoever comes up with the name you end up picking.

There are as many names out there as there are puppies practically. Your challenge is to find one that fits him and that you like as well. Good luck!
