How to use a harness on the dog

By Jerry Welsh

Dog owners would usually walk the pet as it would be a good opportunity to form strong ties with the dog. A dog that is well trained to heel will forget its lessons once an interesting smell or movement is noticed as these animals are known to have high prey drives. The dog can be hurt when it lurches and suddenly pulls on the collar. Slipping out of the collar would be easy for dog breeds with large necks and small heads. A dog that can slip out of its collar can run in the street where there are oncoming cars or can chase other people's pets.

These kinds of situations can be resolved by using dog harness instead of dog collar. A dog harness is very similar to a horse harness as the straps of this piece of equipment is placed around the body of the dog. A dog harness is a better alternative to a dog collar if the pet is handicapped or injured. Ease of travelling in cars is another advantage of using a harness as it can be attached to the seat belt. However, putting a harness on the dog is not as simple as putting a collar.

Dog harnesses comes in different types. There is a kind that can be slipped over the dog's head and buckled around the chest. This kind of harness can be easily adjusted to fit the body of the dog. The step-in type of harness is favored by most dog owners. As the name suggest, the dog's front legs would step into the harness and the ends will be brought up over the dog's back and buckled.

Putting on the harness of the dog would not be too much trouble if the pet is not struggling. Putting on the harness on the dog would be much easier by playing or cuddling the pet for a while. For straggling dogs, it would help if the pet is placed between the legs and gentle pressure is applied to prevent the pet from moving.

For the two-loop harness, the closed loop of the harness is placed over the dog's head and the strap that connects the two circles would be placed over the dog's back, the other strap will go around the chest and buckled. The fitting of the harness is not too tight if two fingers can be inserted between the strap and the dog's body. Attached the leash and the dog is ready to be walked!
