Canine Dental Care

Dental care is so important for good health;
however, many don't realize that dental care for
dogs is also important. It is important that your
dog's teeth are taken care of so that he or she
can avoid serous dental and health concern
issues.

Your dog's teeth can be examined by your vet or
by you. If you do this yourself, carefully lift
up your dog's lips all around the mouth and the
look at the front and back teeth. If the gums
look swollen or pink and you notice a foul
breath, you need to have your vet check out his
teeth to see if there are any dental problems.
Good dental hygiene for your dog is important to
keep him or her well and in good shape.

There are other signs that your dog may have
dental problems such as: having bad breath, he
or she is unable to chew, bleeding gums, missing
or loose teeth or red or puffy gums. Dental
problems in dogs, if not taken care of, can lead
to heart and kidney problems and other health
concerns in the body which can be quite harmful
to your pet.

If you decide to brush your dog's teeth, there
are certain tips that will help such as: using a
special enzymatic toothpaste, never using human
toothpaste, brushing your dog's teeth everyday,
using a long toothbrush made for dogs and
talking with your vet on how to safely brush
your dog's teeth.

It is important to note that the best way to
ensure that your pet's teeth stay healthy and
well is by having your vet give your pet a
thorough dental cleaning. This procedure
requires general anesthesia. Your vet will
examine your pet's teeth and gums and then will
scale and polish the teeth. If your vet finds a
tooth that needs extraction, he or she will take
care of that, too. In addition, by ensuring that
your dog stays well, proper nutrition and
exercise will help to prevent certain dental
problems.

Other ways you can prevent dental disease in
your dog is by feeding him or her dry food. Dry
food is good for your dog's teeth because the
abrasiveness of the food helps to break down
tartar and plaque. Also, make sure that when
your dog is playing with an object like a toy
that it is not too hard. This can damage a dog's
teeth.
