Effects of Caffeine in Dogs

By Jerry Welsh

Dog owners should beware of caffeine poisoning as this concern has no antidote! Caffeine is a highly toxic for dogs and for other pets although this substance can be safely consumed by humans. Coffee, tea, chocolate are some of the food items that contain caffeine. Caffeine is an ingredient added to soft drinks and sodas to give the beverage a pleasant bitter taste. Dogs eat anything thus owners have to be vigilant in keeping the dog away from drinking coffee, tea and chocolate and also from eating coffee beans and coffee grounds.

Coffee beans, tea and cacao beans produce the substance caffeine. Coffee has gained worldwide acceptance as a favorite adult drink. Stomach upset and poisoning are common consequences of the dog's inclination to eat just about anything. Caffeine poisoning is more likely to happen in dogs with coffee drinking owners. An owner not aware of caffeine toxicity in dogs may dump the cold coffee into the doggie bowl. Dogs find the contents of the trash can very interesting. Dogs that have eaten coffee grounds found in the trash can suffer from caffeine poisoning.

Caffeine poisoning will occur if the dog has consumed more than 150mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight. Dogs that have consumed caffeine more than this amount would suffer from the signs of caffeine toxicity. Increased heart rate is one of the effects of caffeine over dose as this substance would trigger the production of adrenaline, the hormone that causes the acceleration of heart rate. A dog suffering from caffeine toxicity would be excited and would have increased respiratory rate. Muscle tremors are another sign of caffeine toxicity. Heavy bleeding and seizures occurs if the dog has ingested foods and drinks containing high levels of caffeine. Arrhytmia and generalized congestion are other signs of caffeine toxicity.

Caffeine taken in the amount tolerable to the dog's system does have some healthful benefits to the dog. Coffee serves as a diuretic because caffeine enhances the activities of the kidneys thereby stimulating the production of urine. The dog's muscular strength is enhanced and the nervous system is stimulated by caffeine. As the heart rate is accelerated, general circulation is improved as well.

In right amount, caffeine improves the peristalsis motion of the intestines. Coffee is actually given to dogs with cardiac insufficiency as caffeine stimulates heart muscles. However, dog owners have to be very careful not to give the pet too much of this substance.
