Caring for Your Favourite Home Furniture

Shopping for home furnishings can be fun to do,
but it can also be a challenge to find the right
home décor pieces that complement your
other furnishings and that carry the style that
you want in your home. Further, the pieces you
select for your home are an investment that you
would like to enjoy for many years in your home.
Replacing furnishings will be necessary over
time, but you can delay the need to invest your
time and financial resources into this effort by
properly maintaining your furnishings. The
property care of your furniture will be
dependent on the composition and construction of
each specific piece.

Upholstered Furnishings
Upholstery generally features comfortable
padding or cushioning covered by gorgeous
fabrics. Upholstery may be found in dining
furniture chairs, sofa, armchairs and more.
Vacuuming these pieces each week when you clean
the rest of your home can remove dirt, dust and
other similar particles that have settled onto
the top layers of the upholstery. However, the
thick padding and cushions associated with
upholstery generally tends to collect particles
in deeper levels where your vacuum cleaner
cannot reach. Because of this, it generally is
necessary to steam clean these pieces
approximately once or twice per year. Steam
cleaning upholstery can be done by a
professional carpet cleaning company or through
your own efforts with a home steam cleaning
machine that features hand-held attachments.

Wood Furnishings
In many homes, upholstered pieces are used in
conjunction with fine wood furnishings to create
a beautifully decorated space. These wood pieces
may include dining tables, china cabinets, end
tables, bedroom dressers and bedside tables,
coffee tables and more. These pieces are prone
to collecting dust, so dusting them
approximately once or twice a week with a basic
dust cloth and dusting spray can provide you
with great maintenance results. However, you
should be aware that these pieces are prone to
developing scratches, water stains and more.
Because of this, care should be taken to keep
water off of them and to remove water that does
fall into them immediately. When placing items
on them that may cause scratches, placing a
protective cloth between the furnishings and the
other items may add an additional level of
protection to safeguard against scratches and
other related damage.

Home furnishings should be functional if you
want to enjoy living comfortably in your home.
However, through regular use of your furnishings
and through exposure to dust, pet dander and
other types of particles, they can easily become
dirty. Taking steps to prevent damage and
regularly cleaning them as recommended can help
to ensure your pieces continue to look great in
your home for years to come.
