Cat Care And What You Should Know

By Robert Baker

When given the proper cat care, your new feline friend can live up to 20 years. For that reason, the decision to adopt a cat should not be taken lightly. It is also important to choose the right pet, one that will fit into your family and be able to live in harmony with any other pets you already own.

There are many things to take into consideration when choosing your new pet. To begin, you should decide between a full grown cat and a kitten. There will be a wide assortment of colors and breeds to select from. You should also decide if you want a female or male and if it will have long or short hair.

Many times people find that the particular feline that they think they want is not a good fit with their style of living. For example, Siamese cats are very vocal. If you are seeking a quiet animal, the Siamese may not be your optimal choice. You may love how a Persian looks but ownership of this breed requires a lot of time and commitment to its grooming. If you have an already full schedule, you might consider a shorthair breed instead.

Most people adore kittens and their cute, cuddly faces. Although adorable, kittens are not for everyone. They are very rambunctious and climb on nearly everything. They require a lot of time and attention. Kittens will also need routine veterinarian care for their shots.

Once you decide on the type and age of the animal you want, where to obtain it is next. Breeders are a good choice for families looking to adopt a purebred pet. Animal shelters are another option if your family does not necessarily need a purebred.

Shelters will require that you pay a fee to adopt the pet. To avoid these fees, some people choose to adopt a stray animal. If you bring in a stray you will need to spend money covering some of the basic cat care needs such as the routine shots. The animal may also need to be spayed or neutered.
