The Polite Pooch: Dog Training Ideas You Don't Want To Miss

By Kirk McGee

When you train your dog he will act better all around. Training also promotes the relationship between you and your dog.

If your dog is constantly tempted to dig up your garden, it may be your fertilizer. Fertilizers made with manure or blood meal are intriguing to dogs and actually attract them to the area. Try replacing your fertilizer with a plant-based variety. Just be sure that whatever you choose is still safe for your dog.

To train a dog to stop barking you must first train him to bark on command. When the dog barks on command instead of when he chooses to bark, it is easier to teach him to stop barking during the training session. Once he learns the command for "stop barking" he will follow it outside of training.

When giving a dog a flea bath, start at the neck and work towards the tail. To prevent fleas from getting into your dog's eyes, ears, or nose, begin the bath by creating a barrier of wet, soapy fur around the dog's neck. As you work your way down, fleas will have no choice but to head for the tail, and inevitably, their death by drowning.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog is that there is a difference between discipline and anger. This is important because your dog only understands right or wrong commands. Your anger will only scare and confuse the dog if it isn't directly related to a behavior you wish to modify.

When teaching your dog how to walk on a leash, hold your ground if he attempts to pull you. Plant your feet and do not budge until the dog stops pulling. Your dog will realize that he gets nowhere by pulling. When you are able to get him to walk beside you, reinforce the habit with treats.

When potty training your new puppy, keep him on a strict feeding schedule. Offer food twice a day, at the same time each day, and take your puppy out to eliminate shortly after finishing the meal. Young puppies often need to use the bathroom quickly after a meal. Giving your dog the opportunity to go outside will get him on a schedule and help to prevent accidents.

Feed your dog consistent amounts at approximately the same time every day. This is particularly important during the house training phase of pet ownership. This allows the dog to establish a regular elimination pattern and the discerning owner can use that pattern to their advantage in speedily training their pet.

As you can see, there are many methods of training available to you, to make your dog the best canine he/she can be. Try any or all of these techniques to begin teaching your pet how to behave properly in your home. An educated animal will be a incredible friend for years to come.
