What to do when the dog has a seizure

By Jerry Welsh

Dogs are highly attuned to the feelings of their owners thus it is very important for the owner of a seizing dog to keep calm. Watching a seizing dog would be very stressful for a pet parent especially if it is the first seizing episode of the pet. It is not uncommon for pet owners to treat the dog as their baby thus watching the pet in obvious pain would be very upsetting. It would be comforting for an owner to know that the dog actually does not feel any pain during a seizing episode. Dogs have the ability to sense what you feel thus your nervousness will not help calm the dog.

If faced with a seizing dog, a pet owner has to keep calm to be able to help the pet. Make sure to get other dogs and other pets out of the way. The trashing of the dog and the bared teeth may cause other dogs to attack. In a seizing episode the dog will lose control of its movements.

Keep the dog safe by removing objects that can fall on the dog and cause further injuries. The dog's uncontrollable thrashing can cause heavy objects to fall on the dog or the dog can also fall from stairs thus it will be your job to ensure the safety of the pet. Slide the dog away from hard objects to prevent the head from being banged.

Seizing dogs cannot swallow their tongue and anyone reaching into the mouth can get bitten instead. The dog though can bite the tongue while gnashing the teeth. The bitten tongue will naturally be painful and would make eating difficult. Tongue injuries can be prevented by placing a strip of rolled cloth across the tongue so that even if the teeth locks, the tongue will not get bitten.

It is important to make the dog comfortable. Seizing dogs often lose control of their bladder. After the seizure, the dog is noticed to be disoriented and may have lost hearing and vision as well. A towel placed under the dog will soak the urine that would make the floor slippery and cause the dog to fall. Staying with the pet in a dimmed room will calm the seizing pet. Cluster seizures can last for about 45 minutes, others will be over in a matter if seconds. Talk to the dog - your voice will calm the pet.
