How to Make Dog Treats Fun

By Geraldine Dimarco

All experienced pet owners know this, no matter how convenient commercial pet food is, there is nothing quite like serving up a batch of homemade dog treats for your pet. Of course I don't mean to put down dry kibble, there are good brands out there in the market. However, you can expect a healthier and happier dog with homemade fare. Do you want to know how to make dog treats? Read on to find out how.

Before we start, you need to visit the veterinarian and have a complete check-up for your pet. Your dog might have some health complications that you need to know about. If there is, you should ask what particular kinds of food you can give him that will supplement his nutritional needs. Find out what your dog needs and look for the recipe that is most appropriate.

First, decide on what you want to make. Usually, treats come in two categories: the sweet doggie biscuits and the more savory varieties. Either one is fine but you must make sure that you have a list of ingredients that are toxic to dogs. Check if they are included in whatever recipe you've chosen and remove them if they are.

Next is the prep time. Have you decided on what you want to put in the snacks? Most meats are fine, although you should stay away from raw fish and salmon. There have been reported cases wherein dogs that ingested salmon have been treated for infection. Liver is good but take heed not to overuse it because too much of it leads to bone and muscle problems.

If you are looking at serving some fruits, make sure you remove all the seeds that it contains. These seeds can trigger cyanide poisoning which, needless to say, is something we can do without. Consider buying those special cookie molds and cutters with canine-related shapes. It may not mean much to the dog, but its fun and who knows-other people might want to order some from you in the future.

Now that all the things are prepared, you can start cooking. You can boil, toast, bake or simply assemble the food. When you cook meat, remove the bones completely. Cooked pieces of bones splinter-- and we all know choking does not a happy eating experience make. Slice the doggie treats in little pieces so that it will be simpler for the canine to eat.

After finishing making the treats, what are you planning to do? You might want to make several extra batches so you can store them for future use. You will save money and effort that way. Keep the homemade dog treats in a sealed plastic and keep them frozen. Remember to thaw them out before serving to prevent chilled doggie teeth.

There it is, the easy way on how to make dog treats. That wasn't so hard was it? Anybody who loves their pet can do it. Start practicing what you just learned and have fun cooking and feeding your pet today.
