Border Terrier - Fundamental Details To Know

The Border Terrier (also called the "Border") is
a member of the terrier dog group. They feature
an otter-like face and wiry coat. The breed is
assumed to have first existed in the 1700s. They
were first raised for hunting foxes. They're a
common selection as a companion dog today. They
are identifiable by their distinctive face and
well-mannered temperament. They are believed to
originate from the UK on the border of Scotland
and England and they have been developed from
common ancestors of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier
and Bedlington Terrier.

They are identified as a small sized breed. The
suggested female dimensions are 12-16 pounds
with a height of 11.5-14 inches, while the male
guidelines are 12-20 pounds and a height of
12-15.5 inches. They're well-known for their
good-tempered, curious and independent manner.
They're usually friendly towards people they're
not familiar with, and this can make them
unsuitable as a guard dog. They're tested as
being quite intelligent, and is ranked 30th
compared to all other dogs when being trained to
understand new obedience instructions.

They're suitable for a family pet, as they are
good with children. Other pets such as other
dogs and cats they're raised with do get along
well with them. Looking after their coat is a
simple task. They require light brushing once
every week, and a full-body groom once every 4
to 6 weeks. They enjoy having a small,
well-fenced backyard so they have plenty of
space, but can be suited to being kept in an
apartment.

They are predominantly long-lived, as is the
case with most small sized dog breeds, and have
an expected life of 12-15 years. Their most
worrying health problem is "Spike's Disease".
They enjoy things such as playing with toys or
chasing balls. To prevent the threat of
hyperactivity or other bad habits, they need
long walks each day owing to their high degree
of energy.

If you choose the Border Terrier you must be
willing to give them plenty of attention,
exercise and stimulation. They're not the best
option for households with prey animals, but an
excellent choice for active owners or families
with time for a dog. One of the most important
reasons why dog lovers find this breed
particularly attractive is seen in that it can
make a great family pet as it has a
well-mannered nature and is great with kids.
Another thing dog lovers find attractive in
regards to them is they have very few health
problems to be concerned about.
