Why Did I Have to Have a Maltipoo?

By B. Gregory Sloan

I remember when my wife kept going on and on about a Maltipoo. She wanted a Maltipoo. What in the world was a Maltipoo? It sounds like something that a dog did rather than the name of a dog breed - mix breed that is. If you happen to be one of the Maltipoo uninformed as I was, here's the deal. A Maltipoo dog is a mix between a Maltese and a Toy or Miniature poodle. A Maltipoo? Are you kidding me? We already had a miniature poodle and I didn't even want that. I mean, if we've gotta' get a dog, come on let's get real dog like Lab or something.

But nothing doing. She persisted. But I was winning. She brought up the topic many times, but no Maltipoo. Whoopee! But then my no Maltipoo plan took a wrong turn. A family friend found out about my wife's Maltipoo fascination. It was kind of him to do, even though I was freaking out about having another dog, but he bought a little Maltipoo puppy from Florida and had it brought up to our home in Georgia by way of a commercial airliner. So, this friend (yeah right, huh) shells out a few hundred bucks for the dog and a couple of hundred more to have it flown to Atlanta. So, a Maltipoo was then sitting in our living room.

But what we didn't know was that the puppy was sick. Not sick as in long term sick. It may have been dog stress or the plane ride, but for two days this puppy pooped all over every spot in our house with a pooping vengeance that no human being should have to clean up. And you know what? For those two days it just so happened that my wife was scheduled to be at a medical convention. Okay, let's sum it up so far, I didn't want the Maltipoo. I was given the sissy Maltipoo. The dog pooped all over the place for two days, and.my wife who begged for the dog was away having fun at a convention while I cleaned up the nastiest dog #2 for two days. Was I mad yet?

Ok, so now some time has gone by. And certainly this little pup didn't stay sick very long. But I still wasn't pleased that I had lost the Maltipoo battle. Butas bad as I hated to admit it, I did. That dog was a winner. She is great. She is one of the cutest, loving dogs I have ever been around in my life. the kind of personality that she has makes everyone love her. I'm glad she's not a guard dog because she would be terrible at that. She would just lick the burglar and usher him in and out of the house! And she loves everyone..especially me, the one who didn't want her in the first place. This is a dog that loves life.

My wife named her Pearlie, and now I can't imagine her not being a part of the family. No, it somehow doesn't seem very cool when the guys are talking about their Labradors and German Shepherds, and I have to tell about my Maltipoo. But what a dog. She's always ready to play, or she's ready to sit right beside you on the couch. She is without a doubt the most lovable dog I have ever seen. So, yeah, I lost the battle to keep a Maltipoo out of our family. But this was a good battle to lose. Maltipoo Pearlie is a great dog, loves hard, and plays hard. So what if I don't have a very macho dog? I've got one that is a keeper.
