What To Look For When Buying The Best Dog Beds For Small Dogs

By Tammie Caldwell

If you have a small breed dog, you realize that these pint-sized dynamos have their own set of challenges that are very different than those of big dogs. Making your dog comfortable doesn't have to be a challenge. Here is what you need when looking for the best dog beds for small dogs.

One benefit to smaller dogs is that they tend to need less room to move and live than bigger canines do. Their accessories are also smaller and tend to take up a smaller amount of room too. Here are some features to look for when searching for a comfortable resting place that will not take up half of your living area.

One thing that most beds have in common is that the utilize a cushion or pad to keep the pet from resting directly on the floor. Over time, shed hair and dirt can build. This will cause the bed to smell and be unappealing for both dogs and humans. If you want to make sure you can maintain your pooch's resting place, you may want to look for a washable cover.

The stuffing that is inside the mattress is also important. Some people love soft padding that will keep their little one comfortable and well supported. Others prefer cushions that are filled with memory foam as these can be very comfortable as well. If you are concerned about pests and parasites, you may want to try a cushion that is filled with cedar shavings or chips. They are not as padded but they do smell nice as well.

You should think about where the bed will be placed. This may influence what kind of model you get. For example, if you will be putting it in a main living area, you may want to look for one that is a bit more visually appealing. Look for models that match your existing furniture as this can help the bed blend in with your general decorating scheme.

Measuring where the bed goes is also a good idea. This is because it can help you find a bed that will not be too large and can also help you determine if you need to find a different place to put the bed itself. Remember that it should be large enough that the dog can stretch out and relax. If you do not have enough space in a particular area, you may want to reconsider where the bed will be placed.

Although you may not think that a bed for a small dog would need to be durable that is often not the case. Small dogs like to chew and dig as much as their larger counterparts. If you do not find a model that is durable and can stand up to wear and tear you may find that you need to replace your pet's bed much more frequently than you would want to. Look for durable fabric covers for mattresses and frames that do not stick up far enough for the dog to be able to chew it.

Shopping is the fun part. There are many places to look for these items. Look on pet-related websites as well as in pet stores. Some stores will cater to small dogs specifically. They may have interesting options but these often come with a higher price tag. Knowing what your budget is can help you from spending more than you might like.
