The Egyptian mau is a breed of cat that is mostly believed to have come from ancient Egypt. There are those who believe the breed goes way back to the Pharaoh era, but this is a contentious matter to be debated in detail. Despite the depictions on the walls of Pharaonic palace in Egypt, there is no other concrete prove of the cats originating from Egypt. This is worth knowing about Egyptian mau kittens for sale.

The word mau in Egyptian language means cat. Even though the cat is named in Egyptian language, there is genetic evidence pointing to the origin of the cat as being Europe. There is genetic similarities between European cat breeds and the Mau which suggest that the origin of the breed may actually be Egypt. It is therefore necessary for further research concerning the truth about this breed to be done.

Currently, not many cats are naturally spotted. In fact, of all spotted domestic cats, the mau is the only other breed that has a spotted coat. The other breed that is naturally spotted is the Bahraini Dilmun that originates in Bahrain. Most other domestic cats that have spotted coats are thought to have descended from the mau. Other spotted cats are a result of cross-breeding and cannot be counted as be naturally spotted.

The Maus have a medium-sized body which comes in three approved shades. These approved shades are silver, smoke and bronze. There are several other shades like blue smoke, black, blue silver, blue spotted and blue that one may come across. However cats with these other shades are not permitted to compete in cat shows. The only approved shades in cat shows are silver, bronze and smoke.

Maus have large eyes that are set wide apart on their head. The eyes have a bright gooseberry green color. The heads are usually shaped like a wedge and proportional to their bodies. The coat is normally short and shiny. The cat has a single coat that does not shed. This makes them safe for people with various allergies.

The fastest domestic cat is the Mau. They are known to run at speeds of over 30km/hr. Their bodies are built for speed and that is why they can run at such speeds. Usually, the skin fold below the belly of the cat is long. When the cat is in motion, the skin fold expands and allows it to fully stretch its legs.

Normally, the hind legs of maus are longer compared to the front legs. This is instrumental in acceleration. Maus are not friendly to other pets or strangers. In most cases, they get excited around their owners and do not cozy up to strangers. Time is needed for them to get used to strangers and other pets. Continuous socialization is essential for them to become friendly to other pets.

For most breeds of cats, the gestation duration is from 65 to 67 days. However, for the maus, the gestation period is different as it is much longer than that of other cats. This breed has a gestation period averaging 73 days.
