KUALA LUMPUR: It is not only people who get to go on holidays these days but dogs do, too.

Thanks to Puppy.com.my, an Internet community portal and hobby website dedicated to dogs, owners and their pet pooches can now enjoy a relaxing holiday together.

Puppy.com.my, which has more than 19,000 members throughout the country, has been organising such outings every other month."

So far the dogs and owners have spent their holidays at A’ Famosa in Malacca and in Port Dickson while another trip to Cherating is in the offing, " said Puppy.com.my president Khoo Boo Gee.

He said members of the web portal enjoyed special privileges which enabled them to bring their dogs into premises which normally banned the animals."We have great fun together during these trips. We also have meetings to discuss the welfare of our dogs, " he said at the Malaysia Dog Olympic Day, held at the Central Park in Bandar Utama yesterday.

Besides holidays at resorts, Khoo said Puppy.com.my also organises trips, weekend getaways and events like the Malaysian K9 Day, Malaysia Dog Day and Malaysia Responsible Dog Ownership Day.

It also conducts a dog obedience and agility training programme on a weekly basis. The Malaysia Dog Olympic Day saw more than 500 dogs taking part in various activities, including a best-dressed dog competition.

The top prize went to a 2-year old Scruffy, a mixed-breed cocker spaniel and schnauzer (also known as a cockzer), which appeared in a striking Hawaiian outfit.

Second place went to Milo, a 3-year old pug.The third place was claimed by Hugo, a 3-year old miniature schnauzer who looked dashing in his biker outfit.

The event was a hit with dog lovers who turned up in droves with their canine pals.Among them was Suzie Wong from Bangsar who came with her two miniature pinschers.Empress Wong, 3, and Lotus Wong, 7, were both dressed in pink tops. Wong’s dogs are Malaysian champions and also ambassadors of the Wagging Tales Association, which brings cheer to shelter homes."Lotus and Empress act as ice-breakers. They visit these shelters which house mentally abused children and try to instil confidence in them," Wong said, adding that the association had 35 dogs.
